This is it – Subtitled

It would be easy to scoff at the memorial nature of This Is It, and cynically dissect the strange, mysterious, oftentimes disastrous private life of its legendary subject. But the truth of the matter is simply this: This Is It is a thundering spectacle perfectly befitting the late, great “King of Pop,” an endlessly engaging experience that will likely hold rapturous fans the world over in its sparkling grasp, not unlike the iconic performer many knew simply as M.J.

The film’s scrolling prologue refers to this collection of rehearsal footage as “intended for Michael Jackson’s personal library.” Then we see the sparkling faces and hear the genuine words of the young dancers chosen to move alongside music’s most awe-inspiring toe-tapper. They are overwhelmed by their fabulous luck, as if this one job will mark the highest point of their careers. “I’m from Australia…” one young man begins, and those are the only words that escape his lips before he is overcome with tears. For him, and for his colleagues, this truly was “it” — the moment of their lives.

I Love You, Man – Subtitled

I Love You, Man – Subtitled

Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is a mild-mannered Los Angeles real estate agent, and his girl is Zooey Rice (Rashida Jones). They have been dating for less than a year, but are madly in love. As the movie opens, Peter proposes, and Zooey accepts. Immediately, she calls her friends to celebrate. This makes Peter realize that he has no buddies to call; he doesn’t even have anyone to be his best man.

Peter has always been one of those “girlfriend guys” who focuses on relationships, not on making friends. This flaw has never bothered Peter before, but when he overhears his fiancé and her friends talking about the potential downsides to his lack of buddies, he decides it’s time to make a friend or two. He turns to his gay brother, Robbie (Andy Samberg), for advice on platonic relationships with other dudes.

Confession of a Shopaholic – Subtitled

Confession of a Shopaholic – Subtitled

A perfect example of this ideal is Rebecca Bloomwood. The heroine of P.J. Hogan’s adaptation of Sophia Kinsella’s Confessions of a Shopaholic, this spunky career gal wants a cushy job, a suave boyfriend, an understanding best bud, and an unlimited credit line… and that’s just for starters. Only problem is, Rebecca (played with real drive by Isla Fisher) is neck-deep in debt. She just can’t stop spending. When her job as a writer for a gardening rag falls through, she applies at the nation’s number one fashion magazine. Named after its editor, Alette Naylor (Kristin Scott Thomas), the job represents the completion of all our heroine’s career goals. Sadly, she has to settle for a gig writing at Successful Saving, a financial magazine. Oh, irony! Luckily, it’s managed by the humble British hunk Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy).

Bruno – Subtitled

Bruno – Subtitled

Sacha Baron Cohen wants to make you cringe. As Brüno, the uber-gay, fame-starved, Austrian fashion whore, Baron Cohen wants you slumped down in your seat, teeth clenched, wondering when the embarrassment is going to end. He’s done it before — with infamous characters Ali G and Borat — but Brüno feels more like shock for shock’s sake. With his previous work, Baron Cohen has already proven he’s a lot smarter than this.

If you’re unfamiliar with Sacha Baron Cohen, think of him as a one-man Candid Camera. Like a possessed Method actor, he disappears into a single-minded character, hurling himself into real-life situations to offend those around him. He’s telling us: Here are people at their most shallow, their most obvious, their most hesitant. He’s telling them: You dimwit, you’ve been had! When Baron Cohen’s act really works — as it did with Borat — there’s biting commentary layered into the humor at nearly every turn. With Brüno’s journey, the humorist’s smarts are too far under the surface.

The Hangover – Subtitled

The Hangover – Subtitled

Doug Billings (Justin Bartha) is getting married in two days, and his best friends Phil Wenneck (Bradley Cooper) and dentist Dr. Stu Price (Ed Helms) are taking him to Vegas for his bachelor party. Unfortunately, the groom’s freakish future brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis) is tagging along as well. With their villa at Caesar’s Palace secured, they head up to the hotel roof for a round of shots before hitting the strip. The next morning, Doug is gone and the remaining “party” members awake in a sea of destruction. Stu has lost a tooth. There’s a newborn baby in the closet. And there’s a real man-eating tiger in the bathroom. Having no recollection of what transpired the night before, Phil, Stu, and Alan begin searching for their missing pal. Along the way, they run into Asian gangsters, Mike Tyson, and Stu’s quickie stripper bride Jade (Heather Graham) — but no Doug. And time is running out before the groom has to walk down the aisle.
