It’s Complicated

Jane (Meryl Streep) is a self-reliant divorcée who owns a successful bakery in Santa Barbara, California. After 10 years of separation and three grown children, she finally achieves a good relationship with her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin), a successful attorney who has remarried the much-younger Agness (Lake Bell).

Jane and Jake attend their son Luke’s college graduation in New York. A dinner together develops into an affair, making Jane “the other woman”. Part of Jane knows it is wrong, since Jake and Agness are still married and trying to have a baby; the other part of Jane relishes being “the other woman” and continues the affair with Jake in Santa Barbara

Deaf and hard of hearing ask for captioning on airline inflight entertainment

The Association for Airline Passenger Rights (AAPR) called on the US Department of Transportation this week to require commercial air carriers to provide closed-caption or subtitles on all in-flight entertainment for deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers. While the DOT requires that captioning be available on all safety and information related videos, it does not enforce the same accessibility standard for in-flight entertainment, such as movies and television shows.

The Tooth Fairy

Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a minor league hockey player nicknamed “The Tooth Fairy” for hitting opposing players so hard that he knocks out their teeth. One night, he steals a dollar from his girlfriend Carly’s (Ashley Judd) 6-year-old daughter Tess (Destiny Whitlock) that had been left for her lost tooth. Later that night, he receives a summons under his pillow. He magically grows wings and is transported to the realm of tooth fairies. There, he meets his case worker, Tracy (Stephen Merchant), and the head fairy, Lily (Julie Andrews). Lily tells Derek that he is a “dream crusher”, because of what he did to Tess. He is then sentenced to serve 2 weeks as a tooth fairy. He returns to his bed and wakes up believing that it was dream.

Daybreakers – Subtitled

Daybreakers

In 2019, most of the world’s population has become vampires because of a pandemic disease. As human numbers dwindle, the need for blood becomes desperate. When deprived for extended periods, vampires transform into sub-siders, aggressive bat-like creatures. Humans are captured and harvested in laboratory farms while scientists research a synthetic blood-substitute. The main supplier of blood in the U.S. is the pharmaceutical company Bromley Marks, run by Charles Bromley (Sam Neill). Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) and Chris Caruso (Vince Colosimo) are hematologists working on the blood-substitute. Under pressure from Charles, they try multiple versions in a series of failing clinical trials. Meanwhile, Edward secretly refuses to drink human blood and faces a strained relationship with his brother, Frankie (Michael Dorman), a human-hunting soldier.

Shutter Island– Subtitled

Shutter Island

In 1954, two U.S. marshals Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane on an island in Massachusetts. They run into trouble when they are deceived by the hospital’s chief psychiatrist and administrator Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), a hurricane hits, and they uncover a series of sinister human experiments reminiscent of Nazi human experimentation.

In the end of the movie it is revealed that “Teddy” is actually a delusional mental patient in the hospital. He murdered his manic depressive wife Dolores Chanal (Michelle Williams) after she drowned their three children.

Extraordinary Measures

Brendan Fraser plays John Crowley, a biotechnology executive whose two youngest children were afflicted with Pompe disease or acid maltase deficiency. Along with his wife Aileen (Keri Russell), he raises money for research scientist Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford), forming a company to develop a drug to save his children’s lives. Dr. Stonehill is a composite of the many great scientists and researchers that researched for a cure over the years, among them Drs Arnold Reuser, Ans van der Ploeg, William Canfield and Dr. Yuan-Tsong Chen.

The film centers on the Crowleys’ two dying children, aged 9 and 7. In real life, most children with Pompe disease would die before age 2. There is also a juvenile and adult form which can present at almost any age. Those in the real story were 15 months and 7 days old when they got sick. They were 5 and 4 years old when treatment began.

Dear John – Subtitled

The movie opens with John Tyree, a young soldier from the Army Special Forces, lying on the ground in his army gear with gunshot wounds. Coins begin to fall over him as he remembers a childhood trip to the U.S. Coin mint. He goes on to state that he is a coin in the United States of America’s army, and that the last thing he thought about before he blacked out, was “you”.

In 2001, John is on leave when he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis, a college student on spring break. In a matter of days, Savannah and John fall in love. John meets Savannah’s family as well as her neighbor Tim and Tim’s autistic son, Alan, who looks up to Savannah. Savannah meets John’s father, who is only interested in his coin collection, but still befriends her. John explains to Savannah that his father has always been obsessed with coins and has not been much of a father to John, whose mother is not in the picture. Savannah mentions John’s father may, like Alan, have autism. This upsets John, who believes Savannah is calling his father retarded.

By moonlight, three bodies float to the surface of the western Massachusetts stretch of the Connecticut river. At South Station, Boston, Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) picks up his daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who has returned home to visit. She throws up, while getting into Thomas’ car. At home, as he prepares a meal, Emma starts a nosebleed and vomits violently and as they hurriedly leave to find a hospital, a masked gunman yells, “Craven,” and fires two shotgun blasts at Emma simultaneously. Blasted through the door, she dies in Thomas’ arms.

At first, everyone believes that Thomas, a police detective, was the gunman’s target, but when Thomas finds Emma had a pistol in her night stand, he starts to suspect that Emma was an intended target. He checks the ownership of the pistol and finds that it belongs to her boyfriend David (Shawn Roberts). David is frightened of the company Northmoor where Emma worked and Thomas discovers that Emma became aware that Northmoor was manufacturing nuclear weapons, intended to be traced to foreign nations if they are used as dirty bombs.

Saint John of Las Vegas

A compulsive gambler attempts to cure his addiction by moving from Las Vegas to Albuquerque and working at an auto insurance company, only to find old temptations cropping up once again when he’s sent out to investigate a dubious car accident just outside of Sin City.

After a string of bad luck at the tables, John (Steve Buscemi) decides to give up gambling and take a shot at a “normal” life. Arriving in Albuquerque and landing a job at an auto insurance company, John goes to work for Mr. Townsend (Peter Dinklage), who pairs him with the company’s top fraud debunker, Virgil (Romany Malco), and sends them out on an investigation together. While John is eager to get a promotion, he’s reluctant to go anywhere near Las Vegas, and before he leaves he strikes up a tenuous romance with his eccentric co-worker, Jill (Sarah Silverman).

Alice in Wonderland

In this extension of Lewis Carroll’s original stories, Alice Kingsley, now 19, attends a party at a Victorian estate shortly after the death of her beloved father. The formal affair, unbeknownst to Alice, is an engagement party planned by her mother and sister. Just as the arrogant and boorish Lord Hamish Ascot proposes to Alice under a gazebo and before the eyes of hundreds of snooty society-types, Alice spots a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch. In shock and confusion, she runs off into a maze and follows the White Rabbit through it. She eventually tumbles down a rabbit hole into Underland, more commonly referred to as “Wonderland” by its inhabitants
